OVERVIEW: Kathleen R. Sherman makes sculptural constructions from organic materials and found objects that evoke a wide range of cultural iconography. She combines materials into unexpected shapes while incorporating a wealth of detail into their surfaces. Each construction, whether free-standing, mobile or wall hanging, forms part of an aesthetic system involving the response of the artist to materials and the viewer to the work.
PURPOSE: To celebrate life through art. To illustrate the underlying kinship of human responses. To bring out possibilities hidden in materials. The pieces reflect part of a complete experience reordered in the art to tell a story.
“I’d like the work to speak; it should say different things to different people, stimulating their imagination.
I want to encourage the joy of discovery in the viewer, delight in the unexpected. My work illustrates the tensions between opposites, and stimulates a range of emotions.
I believe art should always contain its own explanation, and it should make you think.”
